About

Federico Fellini’s Oscar-winning La Strada is one of the all-time masterpieces of world cinema. This stunning new stage adaptation directed by Olivier Award nominee Sally Cookson (Jane Eyre & Peter Pan National Theatre, Hetty Feather West End), boasts a beautiful new score by Benji Bower with songs performed by an international cast of actor musicians.

La Strada ‘The Road’ is a deeply impassioned tale of love and loss. We journey into the heart of the Italian countryside where Gelsomina, full of the innocent spirit of youth, is bought by Zampano, a travelling street performer, to join his ‘strong man’ act. When the mismatched pair stumble across a ragtag circus and a daredevil tight-rope walker, Gelsomina finds herself caught between two roads, not knowing which way to turn…

Shifting between the dazzling lights of the circus and the bare landscapes of rural Italy, this production of La Strada is as poetic as it is heartbreaking and promises a powerful and unforgettable theatrical experience.

Awarded the honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 1993, Italian director Federico Fellini changed the face of film-making forever with his seminal films such as La Strada, La Dolce Vita, 8½, Nights of Cabiria and Satyricon. Marking 60 years since La Strada, starring Anthony Quinn, won the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ Academy award, Fellini’s cinematic masterpiece, hailed as “one of the most influential films ever made” (the American Film Institute), sees its first ever UK stage adaptation.
